about

This track was made in my Newton living room studio (on the cover) in 1986, based around the Optigan keyboard that I had just acquired and modified. It was a 'poor man's mellotron' in that it played analog samples optically encoded in concentric soundtrack circles on 12" film disks - it was very cheap and commonly available in department stores during the 1970s. A friend gave me an Optigan disk of choir voices, which produced the vibe I was after (although the Optigan was purely staccato without attack and decay, which those sounds tend to want - I fixed this once I sampled them into the Mirage I picked up a year later - as heard in the next track). The random cello sounds also came from the Optigan - I broke those out in parallel, and processed them in the modular. Otherwise, I made lots of nicely fat filter-swept sounds using my Moogs, augmented with oscillators in the modular. I was thinking about Tangerine Dream's 'Mysterious Semblance at the Strand of Nightmares' and K. Leimer's 'Imposed Order' LP when I did this, but of course it didn't really go to either place - it lives in some tangent realm. Everything, excepting the bits of modular 'passing spaceship' effects was played live and overdubbed.
