about

These tracks are live recordings made from massive autonomous patches that I put into my custom-designed modular synth rig. There is no live intervention or 'playing' on them - you are hearing what the synth 'dreamed up' itself within the confines of the patch that I entered (it generally takes me between a day and several weeks to perfect such patches, and they can involve hundreds of patch cords connecting 100-200 modules). These recordings use no advanced 'triggering' units - all of the complexity is dictated by patched simple logic modules on the synth itself. These patches would run for days on end, and several of them live-streamed over the net to users all over the world. The tracks on this album are recorded excerpts of these streams. The 'Synth Utopia' series of patches tend towards more towards tonal drones, as opposed to those on 'Synth Dystopia', which are more dissonant. Tracks 1 and 3 were recorded from patches running live at the MIT Museum when the synth system was on live exhibit there between January and March 2012. Track 2 was recorded from a patch made for the MIT Music|Machines Symposium held at the MIT Media Lab - this event celebrated MIT's legacy in electronic/computer music as part of MIT's 150-year anniversary events in February 2011.
