Soft Hyper Brain Powers - A Tribute to the Music of Tod Machover

This is a piece I put together for Tod Machover's 60th birthday celebration towards the end of 2013. Tod's wife June reached out to a bunch of his friends back then to do commemorative remixes, and this was my contribution. It was all done in Ableton and is made mostly with samples and clips pulled from Tod's various compositions, glued together with keyboard parts I laid down (sone using my outboard TX-81Z synth, in homage to Tod's FM roots dating from the TX-816W that he used to use a lot) together with a bit of audio processing plus selections from my own sample library and synth patches I found within Ableton. The entire process took about 3 days.

Tod's music is all summarized at: operaofthefuture.com/music/ and the releases in particular that I borrowed from were: VALIS, Toy Symphony, Death and the Powers, Hyperstring Trilogy, The Brain Opera, Resurrection, Soft Morning/City, Angels: Voices from Eternity, Flora, and Not Simpler - a list that spans 30 years of work! As Tod is launching a rebooted version of his classic opera VALIS at MIT this September, it's a good time to put this out - indeed, the pedestrian vamp that runs through most of this piece is looped from VALIS.

Thanks to Tod for producing a lifetime worth of great music that breaks so many boundaries and giving me permission to use his samples in this piece.
