about

One of my favorite pastimes with my custom synthesizer system is to make very complicated patches that produce a dense and varying autonomous sound. The system becomes a huge musical machine, with wires connected everywhere and lights flashing all over the place, while it drones out all kinds of strange sonic patterns. The sounds in these tracks were all produced in such a fashion; no human intervention occurred at any time, and they were recorded entirely live. The patches here were each finished within less than a day - typically in only several hours. I start with a very coarse sound process, then successively add layers until the synth rig sounds like this. These are among the earliest autonomous soundscapes that I recorded on my system, made between 1985 and 2000. They are for the most part much simpler, less subtle, and more cacophonous than the pieces that I made later. My speech module is the star feature in most of these patches - while I still use it frequently (it's very versatile), my later work tends more to keep it ambient and subdued. Here it's often front-and-center. More info on my synth system is at synth.media.mit.edu and paradiso.media.mit.edu/synth.html
