about

This album is composed of keyboard compositions, either using early MIDI sequencers or played directly onto overdubbed or multitrack recordings. Essentially everything here, aside from some simple sequencer or ambient sounds/textures/rhythms, was played live on the keyboards and recorded. The quality of these recordings accordingly varies somewhat - my work around 88-89 leveraged MIDI sequencers and multitrack recording, hence is more perfected - the older stuff was overdubbed and bounced between tape recorders or via Sound-On-Sound, hence shows its sonic warts. The pieces were mainly done on my custom synthesizer system at various stages during the 1980s - many in my apartment in Newton MA (see the cover photo for what became of my living room there), beforehand when I lived in Zurich (using only a few modules at a time and a few keyboards), or afterwards in the basement studio of my old condo in Medford. The next 3 decades of my musical life focused on music-generating autonomous patches (represented in the other Bandcamp albums), but during the 1980s, I liked to play the keyboards. I still do, and future pieces will involve more of that. More info on my synth system is at synth.media.mit.edu and paradiso.media.mit.edu/synth.html
